Shiatsu Massage Benefits Body and Mind
By Kotohito
Shiatsu massage has its early beginnings in China where doctors were paid to keep people healthy. If the patient became ill, the treatment was free. The Japanese furthered the development of the techniques, and combined massage with acupressure, calling it Shiatsu. The word literally means “finger pressure” in Japanese. Shiatsu does not use the rubbing and kneading technique of Swedish massage but applies pressure using natural body weight and different parts of the therapist’s body such as arms, legs, fingers, hands, and elbows. The therapist locates specific points along the body’s meridians and applies pressure, attempting to restore balance to the flow of energy. The pressure can be applied gently with the fingers or may be applied more strongly depending on the location of the point and the severity of the blockage. The therapist may also incorporate gentle stretching into the massage.
Proponents of Shiatsu (and acupuncture) believe that disease and physical infirmities are caused by imbalances or blockages in the flow of energy through the body. This energy is known as “chi” and flows through the body along meridians or energy channels. The Shiatsu therapist strives for a balance between Yin (negative energy) and Yang (positive energy) and attempts to determine where there may be a build up or deficiency in the energy. Restoring the proper energy flow is believed to have both spiritual and physical benefits. It is not uncommon for a client to experience an emotional response as energy is released from problem areas and restored to proper levels. Crying, feelings of relief, and feelings of well-being are not unusual. A good Shiatsu massage therapist makes it comfortable to experience any response you might have.
Shiatsu massage is an extremely relaxing and healing form of massage. Shiatsu massage treatment can assist with clearing negative states in the body, and enhancing overall health. Clients report improvements in:
- Lower back pain
- Neck and shoulder stiffness
- Muscle pain
- Headache
- Releasing toxins
- Sluggishness or tiredness
- Circulation
- Flexibility
- Negative emotional states and feelings
- Overall lowered stress and increased energy
Many regular massage clients find it beneficial to alternate Shiatsu with
their western massages, and that using different modalities enhances their
results.
